“Fernis” by Charles Hook
DEDICATION
The Sculpture Garden at The 621 Gallery is dedicated to the memory of Charles Hook, founding member of both the Gallery and the Sculpture Garden. Charles passed away early Monday morning after a two year battle with cancer. He was 59. Charles was a professor of Art at Florida State University and an internationally known sculptor. He is survived by his wife, sculptor Deborah LaGrasse and daughters Cayce and Julia Hook.
It is because of Charles Hook and the founding members of The 621 Gallery that Tallahassee has a space for experimental contemporary art and outdoor contemporary sculpture. Thank you, Charles, for planting those seeds which have grown so vibrant and will continue to bring life to the Railroad Square Art Park for generations.
VISION
Born from a grassroots urban revitalization effort, this project will feature the 14 sculptures in the garden, improve the aesthetics of the Gaines Street area while creating a safe environment for visitors to Tallahassee’s largest outdoor exhibition space. The 621 Sculpture Garden will be a destination for cultural tourism, bringing visitors from across the region, the nation and abroad to the Capital City.
DESCRIPTION
Wood + Partners, Inc. and the Florida State University Master Craftsman Studio have come together to create a comprehensive Sculpture Garden redevelopment plan. The plan includes landscape and lighting improvements and sculpture conservation. The sculpture garden will function as an outdoor exhibition space for permanent and rotating artwork. The inaugural reception is scheduled for September 5, 2008.
